Have you ever been banned?

Post by Set »

One request: keep rants to a minimum. A little ranting is ok just don't overdo it.

Have you ever been banned from a message board for any reason whatsoever? I have. If you'd like the names of these places I can give them to you, but if not then there's no point in me telling you.

Awhile ago I ended up banned from several therian boards and two otherkin ones. Not because I was obnoxious, but because I didn't agree with them. And on one therian forum they had a fit because I didn't answer their questions so they could judge whether or not I was "worthy" of talking to them. I'm actually rather happy about it, I don't need nor want to be in a place with elitist snobs like that. The sad part is that's not the first time I've tried to be there and talk to them. I had been there a few years before, and they were exactly the same as they were the second time I tried.

My most recent exodus was from a furry forum that had actually been a rather pleasant place up until hurricane Katrina. I didn't agree with the mods there about New Orleans. Apparently having a differing opinion from the people who manage the forums was a big no-no. Also, seems that the freedom of speech is only permissible in public places and not on message boards, despite the fact that they're on the bloody internet, which last time I checked was public domain and not owned by the people there. Oh yeah...it's also bad to have an opinion that differs from the monotheists' in that place and to tell the truth. As long as you agree like a little sheep and lie to make everyone happy then you can stay. Otherwise they kick you out like they did me.

While the Internet itself is not owned by any one entity, individual servers and networks are. Therefore you are subject to the rules that they set up, and if you don't like it, you can take your ball and play elsewere.

For all my post count here, I really am a shy person. I don't belong to but two or three other message boards, and I mostly lurk on those. Needless to say, by virtue of non-participation, I haven't been banned on any of them.

I don't know why the Pack is different, but I actually feel comfortable here.

Well what I don't get is that if people are so picky then why don't they have resticted, mod approved membership? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this quite right, but it seems as if you're asserting that monotheists are wrong. If indeed you are, keep in mind that everyone's theological beliefs are opinions, including yours. (If indeed I have read that wrong, I apologize.)

To answer the question, no I haven't ever been banned, but I've come close to...facing disciplinary action before. One forum was www.oscarfish.com, which is a website devoted to improving the lives of aquarium fish, particulary oscars and other South American Cichlids. We were playing the caption game in the offtopic section (pretty much the same thing as the funny picture game thread) and I posted this picture:

http://www.funnylane.com/?22

They got kinda mad at me and said that I should have put up some kind of warning above the link, that it was an image of questionable content, since Oscarfish was a kid friendly site.

Also, they got really angry with me once when someone started a thread about gay marriage, asking for people's opinions on it. I expressed my opinions, which happened to differ from the majority, and I caught a lot of flack for it. If someone's gonna start a thread for sharing opinions, they shouldn't be surprised when some people actually do.

Another time a lot of people from the Larkinor forum (check out Larkinor at www.flyordie.com) got mad at me because I posted a thread asking people their opinions about the Iraqi war. They said it was inappropriate to post such a topic that could lead to heated discussions in a forum devoted to a game. Well, there were a lot of other topics that were 'off-topic', not just mine. Furthermore, I guess I can understand why they were mad, I'm sure they didn't want the discussion to escalate into a flame war. But nonetheless, their response was quite a bit more reprimanding than it had to be. They didn't ban me, but they did make me unhappy. I don't mind someone telling me not to do something once, but when five people come into a thread and get all bitchy, it's a little annoying.

I haven't been banned yet, but I think that's because the other forums I hung out on didn't have any strong discussions about anything. I try to be good

Twice.

The first time was six years ago when I went by the name Merlin Durai at a website called CheatPlanet.com, which at the time was called PlanetCommunity.com and looks nothing like the web forum I remember. Like most forums, spamming and flamming were problems, though the most common form of spam/flame came in the form of frequent posters to the wrestling forums starting topics on the pokemon forum (which I frequented) titled "Pokemon sucks." Even the moderators of the wrestling forum frequently partook in such, and few were ever banned or had their accounts frozen because of such, and whenever a spammer/flamer was banned, the other wrestling fans would congregate on the main forum and start a spam protest claiming his banning was unjustified.

One poster in particular that went by the name of Boffo the Clown took the spam war to an extreme. He actually announced himself to be a spammer, and did such so frequently that he acquired a large following of wannabes, so much so that when he was finally banned, the rest of his flunkies starting a host of threads vouching not only for his reinstatement, but for his appointment as an administrator.

At the same time, I'd responded to one of Boffo's alligations that pokemon is strictly for children by writing and posting (if you can believe this) a 75 page R-rated pokemon fanfic called Phoneix Rising, which even Boffo himself responded to by posting "that was freakin' awesome!" Said fanfic inspired other forum attendants to write their own mature-audience fanfics (even Boffo wrote one; as we all predicted, everybody died at the end), and that in turn inspired the owner of P.C. to create a fanfic forum which I and another writer moderated.

Well... By that time, Boffo had made a reputation for himself as an "intelligent spammer" and had made it a point to spam and flame all the forums. Long story short: I deleted Boffo's spam posts on the fanfic forum, the moderators of the pokemon forum and other likewise spam-infest forums did the same, we had a topic at the moderator's forum concerning his behavior, he was banned, his followers congregated demanding he be made an administrator once again, and this time the forum owner gave them what they wanted. One of Boffo's first orders of business was to delete the fanfic forum and ban everyone that had petitioned for his account deletion, me being one of them.

Last I checked, however, Boffo himself had finally been IP-banned for posting pornography. I guess by then it became less about a cheap laugh at the expense of pokemon fans and more about inflating his ego by pushing the limits.

**********

The other time was a few months ago at a forum devoted to, of all things, Mike Reed's classification of flame warfare. Basically, there were three types of topics you could expect to find at that forum:

1) Suggestions for new flame warrior classifications.
2) Links to other forum topics that serve as comical examples of other flame warriors.
3) Wannabe Kung-Fu Masters looking for a fight.

Anyway, somebody suggested a warrior type described as a guy pretending to be a girl, to which I suggested that, since many warrior classifications come with the warning "Imposter often masquerades as [warrior name]," I suggested that it would be easier to instead classify the warrior suggestion as someone that attempts to use their status as a woman to give them an edge in battle and to include in their description that said warrior is often an imposter. That attracted the attention of a long-time poster that went by the name Irritus to the forums that I can only presume was looking for a fight. Long story short: He accused me of sexism and conspiracy theory to which I responded by attempting to clarify further thinking he was just not understanding what I was trying to say, until finally he posted a big long rant that concerned my masculinity, my furriness (I'd prior posted a link to a furtopia.org topic to demonstrate a Necromancer at work), my nonexistent wild conspiracy theories, the size of my male organ... Basically everything about me but the topic of discussion. I responded with a full verbal attack and found out the hard way that "Abusive Admin" is not just a title given out when you reach a landmark post count.

And looking back, all things considered, I'm glad to have been banned from those two forums. Both were spammers paradises around the times I was banned, so the likeliness is that if I'd been permitted to stick around, I would have just been wasting the time.

I have never been banned from a forum, but I have been banned from a thread just because a few people says I cant RPG well and my spelling is bad, and that my character doesnt fit in to the story. My friend Damien was rpging in that thread until he saw that they were being complete
assholes
at me, he quite too.

Terastas: Wow, that must of been some crazy forum. Other than that, the link tot he Flame Warriors website is pretty funny.

Nope, never been banned at all. I've been mean and nasty, yet usually things are cleared up. The thing is is that I don't go beserk when I am proven wrong, I accept there are smarter people there. I have got put into my place a couple times though.

I though perfer calmer discussions, usually where everyone benfits and no one has to walk out feeling like a loser.

Yeah you did read that wrong. What I meant was if a known monotheist posted their opinion on that particular forum you were not supposed to have an opinion that differed from theirs. If you did then everyone had a cow over it.

Yeah I know. It's not like I said anything even remotely like "ZOMG, your opinions are so wack, you suck and should burn in hell you F-ing loser!". Oh well. It's better not to be in places like that anyway.

Coolness. :D

I think the worst forum ever is the ytmnd forums. I'm not a member, and never will be. I like looking at the sites, but when I was reading through the forums one day I realized those people are rude, inconsiderate, and prejudiced. Worst people alive. Ugh.

I haven't been banned, I just simply stopped going to the less-agreeable places. I suppose I've never even stroked anyone the wrong way often enough to risk banning. Most places drove me away with the atmosphere alone.
Do we really need the solution? Couldn't we just enjoy the problem for now?

*nods* Mike Reed's reference is a great site; that's what encouraged me to register in the first place, but... Well, honestly, what kind of discussions would you expect to have at a forum devoted to the art of flame warfare?

The guy that punted me had six thousand posts. Now taking that into account I don't know why his behavior surprised me. :P

I can't say I've ever been banned On a message board but there was this one time at this club thing were I went into accidently, and it was a bunch of freakin hippies complaining about how the government has no right to tax people. And how they should disband the army and just let everybody have free homes. It was a bunch of crap so i just had to say something so I set them straight, and now can't go back to this club thing.

STUPID HIPPIES!!!! :P

I've never been banned from a message board. I've had some individual posts deleted by mods in some discussions that got a little too toasty, but never was action taken against my account.

I have been banned from IRC channels. Well, one channel. The moderators there were awful, showing blatant bias towards friends. Anyone they knew personally was automatically correct, even when evidence or even proof was presented showing otherwise. Anyone who they knew before you was also automatically given more leniency. And their general policies sucked. Moderators would ignore problems with software, and when the problems were pointed out would promise they'd be taken care of. If it was later pointed out that they were still there, that person would be kicked for being a troublemaker or nagging the oh-so-busy mods.

Eventually I got in an argument with one of them, and was myself banned. It was only for a day, and it was years ago, but I never went back. I formed my own IRC channel with the same theme on the same network. No surprise, a lot of people switched over.
