Where The Wild Things Are

Post by vrikasatma »

YES!!! :howl: :oo

Live action film, ladies and gentles. Spike Jonez is directing, Tom Hanks is in it, coming out in 2006. That's all I know for now. They haven't even started filming it yet but I saw some pix of production models. It will be faithful to the illustrations.

I can't WAIT to see the Sea Serpent and the Wild Rumpus! :lovestruck: :wagtail:

As embarassing as it is to say... I haven't the faintest of what this is though the title sounds strangely familiar.

Akela, go check it out.

Here's a link to the entire text of the book:

http://diggity.schwag.org/~user0830/wild.html

It's only 300 words. The beauty is in the illustrations...more like splashpages. Outrageously cool beasties and eminently costumable :D What's coolest is the little boy is technically a werewolf and they make him their king. I had a W:tA character modeled on Max but unfortunately never got a chance to play him

...OMG...are you serious?!

THAT'S Awesome!!!!!

That old book is such a classic.

...I have to wonder how they will stretch the story into an entire feature length film though. ...the book could be read in under two minutes... (...even less, I think...)

What will they come up with for filler? Image

This film has been in the works since 2003. It was going to be released in 2004.

The cartoon site is out-of-date. It listed a different director. Here's a better link (with the pix I was talking about):

Oh man. I LOVED this book when I was little! But I'm with Vuldari, how are they gonna make this as long as a regular movie?

There was an apocryphal storyline hinted at by Sendak that Max made friends with one of the Wild Things, the one with the black fuzzy hair and horns. They gave him the name "Moishe." My guess is, they're going to expand on that.

We may see more of what happened when Max's boat encountered the sea serpent Wild Thing.

If you have a few extra bucks, go to your CD store and scout down the soundtrack to the opera. There's a little more storyline.

Never underestimate a scriptwrites ability to add a bunch of filler. I just hope the stuff they add is good.

The past few years have been good for the fantasy genre in terms of movies. For the most part, they've done good jobs at translating word to film. The technology and people to work it are there.

And again, I have a lot of faith in Tom Hanks and Maurice Sendak. :howl: :oo

Edit: I think the keystone here is to go in with an open mind. It *won't* be a perfect translation of the book — this isn't "Lord of the Rings" here! Basically they're taking Coleridge's "Kublai Khan" and expanding it out to an hour forty minutes. So with that in mind, let's let the storytellers tell their story.

If it was another "Lord of the Rings" translation I would be very dissapointed. The movies missed out on many critical elements.

This is moving ahead.

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/060717d.php

Tom Hanks producing, shooting in Melbourne. I know it's nowhere near but it would be straight RIGHTEOUS if WETA Workshop did the creature effects (imagine Moshe being played by Anthony Serkis...try not to short out the keyboard!). They just had a Pacific Northwest cattle call for boys to play Max just up the road in Seattle a couple weeks ago.

I am SO jazzed for this!!!!!!!!!

Probably the same thing they did with The Polar Express. Song n' dance and a bunch of extra crap.

Seriously, part of me went 'woo hoo,' and another part of me went: 'Tom Hanks as the narrator of another beautifully illustrated but plot-lacking kids book? Yea gawd, here we go again.'

Wow. Just how many people here loved this book as a kid?

I only found one picture. Are the monsters going to be stop animation?

Nope. As I understand it, they'll be bonafide people-in-suits. Not too surprising as most of the Wild Things are flat-footed and a few even have big, clubby human-like feet.

I see. I was confused and worried by memories of movies from the 1950's

Agreed...with one or two notable exceptions, the fifties sucked canal water in terms of creature effects...
