Any members here from Wales?....
...more specifically, from Glamorgan, in the area around Mynydd Baedan or Maescadlawr? This is more of a King Arthur-related topic....
Sure, I could have stayed, could have even been king. But in my own way...I am King. (grabs girl) Hail to the king, baby!

Oh, nononono...Heh, beleive me, I'm of celtic ancestry, but I'm not Welsh. I'm Texan born an raised. I'm a historian, an' I love king Arthur.
I just read this book by these two researchers, and while somma their theories are pretty out there (they think Arthur's brother Madoc discovered America about 500 years b/f Erik the Red), but they've found some interesting stuff, like pretty strong evidence that the battle of Badon Hill (the one thing that links the myth of King Arthur to historical reality) was at Mynydd Baedan and two memorial stones with the inscribed name "Artorius" were found in a nearby dig. I'd just like ta hear if any Welsh members knew anything about the history of the Mynydd Baedan/Baidon area.

Heheheheh, yep. Everybody in my immediate family was born in west Texas ('cept my dad, he was born in Mississippi). That's why it's great ta listen ta my family's accents during Christmas (my aunt sounds like that squirrel from Spongebob and my uncle's a much smarter version of Larry the Cable Guy)!*nagowteena* wrote:and yet again you suprised me, my felow Texan.
now I see were your at, but unfortunatly, I don't know much about that kind of stuff. so I do hope you find what your looking for.
Thanks fer the sites, Lupine. Weren't much help, but I 'preciate it nonetheless. There's actually another guy from north Wales some think may have been Arthur: Owain "The Bear (Arth)" and/or his son Cuneglasus. Heck, just 'bout every place in Britain's got a claim ta King Arthur!

Yeah I think your right....Everyone wants a piece o' Arthurs a**
I think he was probably a mish mash of different warriors/swordy blokes, I think the legends been blurred over the years, in a kind of bibley sort of way.
I know cornwall also has a claim on him.
This Owain fella...Was it Glyndwr?

Nope. Owain Ddantwyn (think it means White Tooth). He ruled Gwynedd in the late 5th century, and was killed by his nephew, Maelgwyn. Yer probably right 'bout the deeds of many guys being mixed together, but the Arthur, the one that's at the heart of all the myths, is the leader who fought at Badon. That's why I'm so fixed on that battle. The king that these guys Blackett and Wilson say fought at Mynydd Baedan was Athrwys/Arthwys ap Meurig, king of what's now Glamorgan.lupine wrote:Yeah I think your right....Everyone wants a piece o' Arthurs a**

Thanks, Lupine. The resources ya got over there in Wales are probably better than what we gots over here across the pond. Been doin some research on Athrwys, an' it seems the major flaw wit that theory's that Athrwys apparently lived a hundred years too late fer the traditional Arthur of Baedan(c.520 CE).
I'm still convinced that Badon Hill was Mynydd Baedan, though. It's got intrenchments, the remains of an old camp, place names (the road leadin' up ta Baedan is "Road to the Tummult" and the field below is the "Field of the Battle Area") local tradition that says a battle was fought there after the time of the Romans, and even tumuli, or mass grave mounds, which were used by the Saxons at that time. In other words, antything you can get me on the local history around Baedan would be greeaaaate. Thanks.
